:.One Thousand Paper Cranes.:October 24, 1955 The acidic smell of ammonia clouds the hospital air, choking out the odors of burned flesh and dying bodies, burning my nose. Doctors hurry by, barely sparing a passing glance as the urgent call of heart monitors beckons them on. Sitting upright in my hospital bed, the scratchy fabric of a blanket irritating the skin on my legs, I reach to the bedside table for another scrap of paper. A chain of paper cranes at least four feet in length lazily winds throughout the small bed, constantly growing as a new folded bird is added to the last. Processions of chain drape gracefully across chairs left by past visitors, flut:.One Thousand Paper Cranes.:
